Simple File Server (sfs) is a legacy distributed object storage system designed to handle billions of large and small files using minimal resources. Originally developed by PitchPoint Solutions, this project is no longer under active development. It stores object data in replicated volumes similar to Facebooks Haystack Object Store and uses Elasticsearch for metadata indexing, enabling rapid operations even with millions of objects per container. The server supports object versioning to prevent accidental overwrites, configurable time-to-live for automatic expiration, and encryption at rest via AES256-GCM with managed master keys from AWS KMS and Azure Key Vault. It implements an HTTP API compatible with OpenStack Swift, allowing integration with existing cloud storage tools. The system supports dynamic large objects for terabyte-scale files and allows easy cluster scaling by adding new nodes without immediate data rebalancing.
